If you suffer from insomnia or wake up in the middle of the night and can't find your way back to dreamland, taking CBD for sleep may be the solution you've been looking for.

In this article, the cannabis experts at UATRAVA discuss everything you need to know about CBD for sleep so you can make an informed decision about what you're taking into your body.

CBD: What is it?

CBD is a member of a special class of chemical compounds referred to by those in the know as cannabinoids.

CBD research is still in its infancy, but the scientific and medical communities (not to mention cannabis enthusiasts) already agree that CBD can do a lot of very useful things, including:

  • Ease the pain
  • Relieve the alarm
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Relieve psychosis
  • stimulate appetite
  • Reduce nausea
  • Reduce cramps/convulsions
  • Prevent degeneration of the nervous system
  • Another very beneficial effect of CBD is its ability to help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. That's why we've dedicated an entire article to discussing CBD for sleep.

CBD for sleep: how does it work?

Here's a funny little thing: your body and brain contain certain receptors that only interact with cannabinoids.

In fact, your body actually produces its own array of cannabinoids for activities like managing emotions, regulating pain sensitivity, regulating appetite, and yes, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep.

These cannabinoids are called endocannabinoids (endo means inside or internal), and the neurons and receptors they interact with (CB1 and CB2) make up the endocannabinoid system.

So basically your body is already used to taking cannabinoids as part of its natural daily activities. The nice thing is that the endocannabinoid system also takes in cannabinoids from outside your body.

And where do these external cannabinoids come from? Of course, cannabis!

You consume THC, CBD, CBN, and CBG when you smoke, eat, or otherwise use cannabis - which then enters the bloodstream, are all called phytocannabinoids (phytocannabinoids, cannabinoids that are related to the plant).

Your body does not differentiate between endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. All he "knows" is whether these cannabinoids are present or not.

When present, they turn on certain systems in your body (emotions, pain, appetite, and the circadian systems mentioned earlier). When there are no cannabinoids, these systems are disabled.

Think of your endocannabinoid system like a game console.

When you connect or download a certain game, the console gives you a certain set of results. So, if something is really wrong, connecting Pac-Man will give you the expected dots, ghosts and flying fruits. If you insert a different cartridge, you will expect different results.

You can use the same concept to understand what is going on in the endocannabinoid system. Individual cannabinoids - THC, CBD, CBN, etc. - are like game cartridges.

When connecting THC to endocannabinoid receptors, you will get a certain result (usually in the form of a psychoactive effect on the brain and body). When you connect CBD to endocannabinoid receptors, you will get different results.

In the case of CBD for sleep, when you flood your system with cannabidiol, CBD molecules dock with CB1 and CB2 receptors, calm you down, help you stop thinking, and allow you to fall asleep faster and sleep through the night.

CBD and other ingredients

While CBD for sleep is a great solution for your insomnia or midnight restlessness, many CBD products also contain other ingredients such as melatonin, cannabinol (CBN), and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that helps your body know when it's time to sleep and wake up. Melatonin levels rise at night and fall in the morning depending on the amount of light you get each day.

Sometimes, for various reasons, melatonin is not enough in the body. This can make it difficult to relax and fall asleep.

Taking CBD for sleep, which includes melatonin, helps "reboot" your system so it can function normally, relax, and fall asleep in minutes, not hours.

CBN

Several small tests investigating cannabinol (CBN) as a sleep aid (one of which was conducted back in 1976) show that it can produce more sedative effects than THC without trippy side effects and can increase the sleep cycle in rodents.

CBN combined with CBD for sleep also results in less residual lethargy that sometimes occurs in the morning with other common sedatives.

Gamma aminobutyric acid

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (or GABA for short) is a naturally occurring amino acid that acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in your brain.

GABA blocks certain brain signals and reduces the activity of the nervous system. Because of these effects, GABA helps you stop thinking and makes you feel more relaxed so you can fall asleep and stay that way.

It can be very difficult to understand what causes insomnia or sleeplessness in the wee hours of the night.

Not enough melatonin? Not enough GABA? Not enough naturally produced endocannabinoids telling your body to relax?

That's why when you read the label of sleep CBD, you often see other ingredients included. They are already present in your body and brain (to some extent), so there is very little risk of consuming too much or experiencing negative side effects.

And by incorporating these additional ingredients, CBD Sleep Products eliminates all potential issues that may be keeping you from falling asleep.

CBD for sleep: what form should you take?

You can get CBD for sleep in a wide variety of products these days, but they all fall into three main categories:

  • Edible (For example: Gummies or CBD Bears)
  • Swallowing (tablets)
  • Inhalation (Vape)

Edible CBD is pretty much useless as a sleep aid unless you plan on using it to relieve muscle soreness or some other localized pain that keeps you from relaxing.

This leaves ingestion (oils or tablets) and inhalation as the main ways CBD enters your body. We will look at each of them in more detail.

ingestion

It doesn't matter if you swallow or let something dissolve under your tongue (sublingual) or along your cheek (buccal) - it's still swallowing.

Because CBD is so discreet and easy to use, it is one of the most popular methods available.

  • Products include:
  • CBD Tinctures (CBD Oil)
  • CBD gummies
  • CBD strips (dissolves in the mouth)
  • CBD tablets
  • CBD Isolate
  • CBD edible

As you can see, the options are wide and varied, so don't be afraid to experiment to find the CBD product that works best for you.

Inhalation (Inhalation | Vape)

Inhaling CBD for sleep includes any method that requires inhaling smoke or vapor into the lungs.

These are more traditional "smoking" methods that may be associated with past marijuana use. Inhalation includes products such as:

  • smoking through Schools (Joints)
  • smoking through Blunt
  • Smoking through the bong
  • Smoking through oils (through a nail attachment on a bong or through any other devices h.p. vaporizer)
  • Pens with CBD (Vape pens with liquid)

One of the great things about inhaling CBD while you sleep is that the effects are almost immediate. With many ingestion methods, you will have to wait an hour or more before you finally feel like you can fall asleep.

But with any of the inhalation methods, you will begin to feel calmer, less anxious, more relaxed, and ready to fall asleep in minutes rather than hours.

Is CBD safe?

Yes, CBD for sleep and everything else is safe. There are very few side effects associated with CBD (in any form). One of the few frequently reported problems is the tendency to dry mouth after taking CBD.

In a world full of treatments with a long list of negative side effects, most worse than the original problem, a little dry mouth is a small price to pay for a good night's sleep.

Plus, you'll be sleeping, so you don't care anyway.

However, it's also important to keep in mind that CBD is biphasic, which means that at certain levels, CBD provides a specific list of effects. At other - often higher - levels, CBD produces different effects.

So, if you're taking CBD for sleep, it's important to experiment with dosage and find what works for you. You can also use our CBD Dosage Calculator

The only other side effect of CBD is a decrease in your liver's ability to process other medications. So, if you take heart medicine and add CBD to control your blood sugar, you may be doing more harm than good.

Be sure to talk to your doctor about whether CBD is right for your condition.

Talk to your doctor

We know that in Ukraine and the CIS the topic of CBD is not very developed, but you will be surprised how many doctors are already interested in this substance and are studying it!

Therefore, you may also want to talk to your doctor before trying CBD for sleep. This makes sense if you use some special drugs and CBD, as we wrote above, may slightly worsen their effect.

In principle, as with any substance taken for medicinal purposes, it is always a good idea to consult a physician or qualified health care professional (if you can find the right one, of course).

They can provide clinical information about your condition and recommend the best treatment.

When you're ready to try CBD for sleep, talk to our managers to help you find the best product for your needs (such as tongue oil, vape, or gummies)
