Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022, Russia's war against Ukraine, Russian aggression against Ukraine - Russia's open military attack on Ukraine launched on February 24, 2022. The invasion is part of the Russian-Ukrainian war started by Russia in 2014 and in which Russia has consistently denied participation.
The military campaign began after a long build-up of Russian troops since November 2021 along the border of Ukraine with the Russian Federation and Belarus and the recognition by the Russian authorities on February 21, 2022 of terrorist entities on the territory of Ukraine, the DPR and the LPR as state entities. Almost simultaneously, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation began the undisguised deployment of additional troops to the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
At about 5:00 Kyiv time (UTC+2) on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation allegedly with the aim of "demilitarizing and de-identification of Ukraine"; A few minutes later, rocket attacks began throughout Ukraine, including near Kyiv. Russian troops broke into Ukraine near Kharkov, Kherson, Chernihiv, Sumy, entering from Russia, Belarus, and temporarily Russian-occupied Crimea. Together with Russia, Belarus is also waging a war against Ukraine, from the border regions of which missile attacks are launched on the territory of Ukraine, which subsequently sent its troops. Russian-controlled Transnistria (Moldova) is also a potential threat.
Thanks to the resistance of the Ukrainian army and self-defense forces, already in the first days of the aggression, the Russian army suffered significant losses in manpower and equipment. In its recent history, according to Ukraine's estimates, Russia in all the wars it waged has not yet suffered even such large losses in such a short time. According to Western intelligence, Russia met stronger than expected resistance, which led to logistical problems for its troops, lack of fuel, ammunition and food, undermining the morale of the attackers. The rapid unification of the countries of the world to help Ukraine, as well as the introduction of powerful sanctions against Russia, was an unexpected blow for the aggressor country
