HHC and Kratom: Ban in Ukraine - Prerequisites, Consequences, Possible Solutions

On November 15, 2024, the Ukrainian government officially banned the use and circulation of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) and kratom. This step was made under Resolution No. 1306 , which added the substances to the list of prohibited substances. However, this step has caused much controversy among both citizens and experts.

HHC: A New Challenge for Regulation

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a synthetic cannabinoid produced by hydrogenating THC. Although it is less psychoactive, HHC is used in vapes, oils, and capsules. The ban in Ukraine was motivated by the following arguments:

Similarity to THC: HHC produces effects similar to marijuana, which makes it difficult to regulate.
Lack of control: Due to the "gray" market for products.

Kratom, known as Mitragyna speciosa, has been used for centuries in Asia to relieve pain and boost energy. In Ukraine, its popularity has grown due to its low cost and easy access. However:

Consequences for consumers and businesses

Is the ban approach effective?

Although the ban is positioned as a health concern, other harmful products such as alcohol and tobacco remain legal. Some experts believe that it would be better to introduce strict controls on the production and sale of these substances instead of a ban.

Alternatives and Prospects

The Ukrainian market is gradually adapting. Some stores have suggested replacing kratom with other natural products, such as herbal teas or CBD products , which remain legal and safe.

The ban on HHC and Kratom is likely to be just one chapter in Ukraine's long battle with new psychoactive substances, but the effectiveness of such measures remains an open question.
